NeIC – The Nordic e-Infrastructure Collaboration

Funding source: National research agencies, in Finland Academy of Finland

Duration: Ongoing

What we are doing:

The Nordic e-Infrastructure Collaboration (NeIC) is an organisation that facilitates the development and operation of high-quality e-Infrastructure solutions in areas of joint Nordic interest. The NeIC is a distributed organisation consisting of technical experts from academic high-performance computing centres across the Nordic countries.  The NeIC is administered by NordForsk and funded by national research funding agencies (in Finland by the Academy of Finland).

NeIC is the outcome of a process that began with the Nordic Data Grid Facility pilot in 2003. Since 2012, NeIC has assumed a broader role as a facilitator of development and operations of high-quality e-infrastructure solutions of joint Nordic interest.

In 2013, the research funding agencies and NordForsk signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that provides the framework for 10 more years of e-infrastructure collaboration under the NeIC umbrella.

The collaboration was launched in 2003 in response to a decision by the research funding agencies in the Nordic countries to contribute to a distributed computing infrastructure for analysing and storing the data generated by experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN (the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers).

As a national e-infrastructure provider CSC is heavily involved in NeiC activities and represents Finland in the NeiC Board. Services provided by NeIC are available for Finnish researchers. NeIC also provides research collaboration, networking opportunities and training within the Nordic countries.

CSC takes part in the following NeIC projects:
