Arrowhead Tools for Engineering of Digitalisation Solutions

The Arrowhead Tools project aims to develop digitalisation and automation solutions for the European industry to close gaps that hinder IT/OT integration by introducing new technologies in an open source platform for the design and run-time engineering of IoT and System of Systems. The project will provide engineering processes, integration platform, tools, and tool chains for the cost-efficient development of digitalisation, connectivity and automation system solutions in various fields of application.

CSC develops the finite element software Elmer to make it better suited for automated industrial workflows. This includes the development of more robust modeling capabilities and provision of the code as a service on CSC's Rahti platform. The main application area is IoT workflows for electrical machines, where ABB, VTT and Wapice operate as the other Finnish partners. Elmer will also be used by VTT to provide computational data for deep learning models of electrical machines.

  • The Finnish collaborators will directly benefit from the project as their modeling capabilities will improve. Particularly VTT benefits from the project through being able to better utilise CSC's research infrastructure.
  • The developments will be freely available to Finnish Universities in the area of electromechanics (mainly Aalto & LUT)
  • The project enables partly a critical mass for Elmer development, thereby benefiting the whole Elmer community consisting of thousands of users.
  • Arrowhead Tools is among the largest digitalisation projects of the EU. Through it, CSC will gain understanding in real industrial workflows and how they could better utilise CSC's cloud and IoT infrastructures.
