Free-of-charge use cases for end users in CSC's computing, cloud and storage services

The department for Higher Education and Science Policy and General Upper Secondary Education of the Ministry of Education and Culture procures service packages to serve educational, scientific, cultural and administrative needs in 2019. 

The right to use CSC's services is based on users affiliation to a Finnish higher education institution (Universities, Universities of Applied Sciences), or a state research institute.

The following use-cases are interpreted as free-of-charge for end users in CSC's computing, cloud and storage service (Taito, Puhti, Puhti-AI, Mahti, Allas, cPouta, ePouta, Rahti, Notebooks, Kaivos):

  1. Research in higher education institutions
  2. Research in state research institutes
  3. Education in higher education institutions
  4. Training provided by state research institutes
  5. Cooperation with companies in higher education institutions and state research institutes
  6. International usage
  7. Government's analysis, assessment and research activities
  8. Local IT support necessary to use cases mentioned above

 

Research in higher education institutions

The use of services is free of charge for academic research (doctoral dissertations or post-doc research) in Finnish universities and universities of applied sciences. Research results and data sets (including publications, learning materials, data, code and algorithms) must be released publicly, preferably for peer review, as openly as possible and as protected as necessary.

Research in state research institutes

The use of services is free of charge for academic research comparable to research done in higher education institutions. Research results in either

  • scientific publication
  • public research report
  • open data set
  • or other data set available for academic research (including publications, learning materials, data, code and algorithms.

Data storage (research data), under certain conditions and by agreement with Minedu, is free of charge in Fairdata services (IDA and Digital Preservation Service for Research Data).

Separate contract with CSC is needed for e.g. customer funded research projects 

  • statutory duties as public authority (viranomaistehtävät)
  • operative systems or services related to research data management that require higher SLAs than CSC's services (e.g. availability or customer support) 
  • duties as public authority and service production funded from the budget of the ministry responsible for ownership steering


Education in higher education institutions

The use of services is free of charge for research based education in Finnish universities and universities of applied sciences for following use cases: 

  • Training accounts and course usage
  • Thesis work 
  • IT environments and support services for a single course
  • Piloting IT solutions for education

Separate contract with CSC is needed for e.g. 

  • Production use of learning management systems and MOOCs 
  • Production use of basic IT infrastructure for education in HEIs and SRIs


Training provided by state research institutes

The use of services is free of charge for research based training for academic community in state research institutes; for example in using or analysing data sets /materials provided by SRIs.

Separate contract with CSC is needed for e.g. 

  • General (chargeable) training  provided by SRIs


Cooperation with companies in higher education institutions and state research institutes

The use of services is free of charge for academic research done in cooperation with companies in the following use cases: 

  • Company paid research, that produces peer reviewed publications, public theses or open data sets
  • Project, that has been granted resources free of charge on the basis of the KTLO agreement, may have member(s) from companies or other collaboration partners, when approved by the project manager. 

Data opened for research use by a company

  • CSC may grant access to CSC's services for a company representative that opens company's data for research use.

Separate contract with CSC is needed for e.g. 

  • Company paid research, that does not produce peer reviewed publications, public theses or open data sets


International usage

The project manager can apply for a fixed-term user account and access to the project they manage for their international collaborator when the following criteria are met

  • The project is academic research in Finnish HEI or SRI
  • The results (knowledge, experience, publications) of the international use should benefit research groups in Finland.
  • Project manager of a research group doing experimental research in Finland can apply CSC resources for a computational research partner or group working abroad.


Government's analysis, assessment and research activities

Use of services is free of charge for the joint analysis, assessment and research activities, coordinated by the Government, in Finnish higher education institutions and state research institutes.

Local IT support necessary to use cases mentioned above

IT support staff in Finnish HEIs, SRIs and Valtori can register a personal CSC account, create a CSC project and apply recources for it, if it is necessary to support the DL2021 use cases (e.g. testing, instructions, piloting).
