Elmer
Open source multiphysical simulation software
Elmer is an open source multiphysical simulation software based on the finite element method
Service description
Elmer is an open source multiphysical simulation software mainly developed by CSC. Elmer is based on the finite element method (FEM) and includes physical models of fluid dynamics, structural mechanics, electromagnetics, heat transfer and acoustics, and beyond. Elmer is easily tailored also for new user needs. Elmer supports parallel computing with excellent scalability for many types of problems. The features of Elmer makes it an attractive solver for novel simulation cases, massively parallel simulations and various open source workflows. Elmer has extensive documentation and precompiled binaries on various platforms. CSC's customers can get guidance in the use of the code.
Technical information
Use of Elmer requires some understanding of the underlying partial differential equations. Typical users are engineering or natural sciences users students and researchers. For many users commercial finite element codes may be easier to operate but open source software provides some advantages that may appeal to some users and use cases. The computational platforms for Elmer may range from standard laptop to supercomputers depending on the needs of the computational problem. Same case may be run on all platforms without any changes.

How to obtain the service
End users can use Elmer software directly on CSC's platforms (Mahti, Puhti and Lumi). Alternatively existing binaries are provided for Windows and some Linux platforms. Some users may also compile the code by themselves directly from ElmerCSC on Github. CSC's customers may ask questions via our ServiceDesk. Also limited public support is available at the Elmer discussion forum Elmerfem.
Code is free under LGPL and GPL. Tailoring of code for customer needs may be provided as additional service done using CSC's pricing for labour.
