Digital Preservation Service for Research Data

Reliable preservation of digital information for decades or even centuries

Service description

National Digital Preservation Service (DPS) for Research Data is dedicated for data sets that have great current and future value to an organization or at the national level. This service guarantees the preservation of digital assets from several decades to centuries. Hardware, software, and file formats will become outdated, while the information must be preserved. Reliable digital preservation requires active monitoring of information integrity and anticipation of various risks. Metadata, which describes for example the information content, provenance information and how the content can be used, has a key role in this. Fairdata services enable quality management, safe storing and findability of research data and their metadata. The ownership of the data remains with the organizations through the entire preservation period. Organization that has preserved research data in the DPS can get the data back.

Technical information

To store data in DPS, the file format and metadata must meet the requirements. The metadata are sufficient and guarantee comprehensibility. The file formats used are sufficiently transparent to ensure digital preservation and comprehensibility of data content. There are no ethical or legal problems with the research data, e.g. unresolved copyright or identifiability issues. Guidance how to meet these requirements are advised in detail in user guidance.

How to obtain the service

The Digital Preservation Services are provided and owned by the Ministry of Education and Culture and they are produced by CSC - IT Center for Science Ltd. To use DPS, you need a formal contract with CSC as well as a preservation agreement for a given data set(s) with the Ministry of Education and Culture. DPS support helps with the preparation, packaging and ingest of data.

The Ministry of Education and Culture (Minedu) grants access to DPS for Research Data and makes preservation agreement on the organization’s request. The preservation agreement determines the set of data (also called purpose of use) to which access is granted, as well as the capacity reserved for it from the DPS.
