Service description
Pukki is a Database as a Service (DBaaS), suitable for most database use cases. With Pukki you can easily and effortlessly set up a database with a few clicks and manage it as a self-service, instead of manually setting up and maintaining your own database environment. Pukki is a generic database service that can be used as a stand alone database for you to retrieve, manage and manipulate data. Pukki can also be used together with other services like Puhti, Mahti, Rahti and cPouta. It is especially well suited together with Rahti, since databases can be tricky to get working well on top of Kubernetes. Pukki provides: PostgreSQL (and from 2Q2025 also MariaDB) databases for efficient data handling, automatic daily backups that are stored for 90 days, automated upgrades when suitable for the user, and managing firewalls and database user accounts.
Technical information
Pukki is a self-service and can be used both from web interface or throught API. The services have easy-to-use browser interfaces which don't require any special skills. Advanced users have the option to use command line tools and an API.

How to obtain the service
To use the service the you must have a CSC user account and a CSC Project, which can be applied for research or education purposes via MyCSC. The Service access also needs to be activated in MyCSC. Instructions are found in Docs CSC.
Service is free of charge for use cases defined in the CSC free of charge policy. For other users, please contact CSC's Service Desk. Free academic use default quota for a new project is 10 TB. Free quota can be extended with application. 1 TB of data stored in Allas consumes 24 Billing Units (BU) in a day and 8760 BU in a year.
