STAC – how to find and use spatiotemporal data easily?

This workshop is for new users of STAC – Spatio-Temporal Asset Catalog. STAC is a specification to describe geospatial datasets with temporal dimension. It drastically simplifies searching and downloading datasets. STAC includes only the metadata of datasets and links to the actual files. The data files themselves are usually stored in the cloud. STAC is most often used for remote sensing imagery and other raster data, but it can be used also for vector and point cloud data. STAC is especially suitable for time-series applications.

CSC has Paituli STAC, which includes ~100 Finnish raster datasets. Browse data contents of Paituli STAC

Topics of the workshop:

  • General introduciton to STAC
  • Data contents of Paituli STAC
  • Hands-on exercise, how to use STAC from Python.
  • Discussion

For hands-on exercise we will use CSC Noppe service with JupyterLab, so participants do need to install anything to their own laptops.

See Paituli STAC page for more information.

Workshop materials (updates still coming):

The workshop is free of charge, but registration is required by 9.3.2025

The workshop is in big part similar to the CSC STAC workshop in June 2023.
