Transferring large data using Funet FileSender
With Funet FileSender, you can easily send files that are too big to send via e-mail.
Background
Sending large files by email isn’t ideal. Many systems simply won’t accept big attachments, and no one enjoys a cluttered inbox. Sometimes you need to share files with several colleagues at once, encrypt the data, or transfer to CSC’s supercomputers.
Solution
Funet FileSender is designed to send large files (currently up to 300 GB) securely. It is browser-based and can be used with Haka & Virtu accounts, so no additional installations or credentials are needed! The receiver doesn’t need any credentials.
Funet FileSender also has the option for encryption. Files are removed automatically after a time period defined by sender (current maximum of 21 days).
If you wish to receive a file from a colleague without Haka or Virtu credentials, you can use the one-time voucher option. It is also possible to use Funet Filesender via command line, which can be handy when transferring data to CSC supercomputers. Another option for sharing data is using Allas tools, which also requires command line usage.
Possible challenges and limitations
Sharing sensitive data requires encryption and proper passwords to ensure data safety. (More info on managing sensitive data: https://research.csc.fi/sensitive-data/managing-sensitive-data/)
Login to Funet FileSender with Haka or Virtu
CSC user account is not needed, your university or institute (=Haka or Virtu) credentials are enough!

After logging in, you can upload your data. You can choose to encrypt the data. Then you can send the link to the file to the recipient or through Funet FIlesender, in which case the recipient gets an email with a link to the file.

After receiving the link to the data, the recipient can easily download it from the browser. After the time limit, the data is automatically removed and is no longer available.

If you need to receive some large data from your colleague, you can send a “one-time upload voucher”. With the voucher, your colleague is able to upload file(s) and send the link to you, without login in.

Funet FileSender can also be used via command line. This can be handy if you or your colleague wants to transfer the data for example to a CSC supercomputer. Another option is to use Allas publishing options “a-flip” and “a-publish”. After the data is loaded and published in Allas, URL link to the data can be shared to whoever, and no login is needed to download the data. However, when uploading the data to Allas, CSC account is required (as opposite to Funer Filesender, where Haka/Virtu login is enough).
