Sensitive research data: storage and transfer via SD Services

In this example, we are working on a research project focused on collecting sensitive research data (e.g., consented data). We are collecting various types of files (videos, audio recordings, spreadsheets, questionnaires, genomes) and need secure services provided by CSC to store them. Since we don’t have any programming experience, we are looking for a service with an intuitive and user-friendly web interface and that we can access on demand. This would allow us to easily upload, manage, and share our data without technical expertise.
Additionally, we want to transfer some of these files to our collaborator, who works in a different academic organization. Our collaborators will then download and analyse the data in their secure work environment.
In this case we are using:
- MyCSC portal Through the MyCSC Portal, you can create an account, set up a CSC project, and access the SD Connect service.
- SD Connect SD Connect is a user interface that allows you to easily upload or download any type of file directly through your browser. The files are automatically encrypted and securely stored in CSC’s storage solution, with the encryption key managed directly by the service.
Getting started with CSC services usually takes up to six hours. If you run into any challenges, our experts are here to help and most issues can be resolved in just a few minutes. You can also reach us anytime through our online support.
Create a CSC account
Set up a CSC account and activate the necessary services. Ensure both research groups involved in the collaboration have their own CSC projects. As part of the initial setup, you’ll also need to apply for resources, add project members and activate the second verification step on your profile. These steps are only required once when setting up your account.
Accessing Sensitive Data services (Docs)Data Protection
When accessing your project, you need to complete the Description of Processing Activity form if your project handles personal data, ensuring compliance with European data protection regulations. If transferring data outside the EEA, confirm legal requirements; for assistance, consult your organization’s legal office using documents provided here.
InstructionsUpload data to SD Connect
Log in to SD Connect to upload files or folders. The system will automatically encrypt all files upon upload. Share the data with collaborators with data transfer permissions, in this manner they will be allowed to download a copy of the files in your local environment.

When your research project is completed, the original dataset stored in SD Connect can be submitted for publication under controlled access (e.g., via Federated EGA or other CSC services). The default lifetime of a CSC project is one year. You will receive an email notification via the MyCSC portal when your project is nearing expiration. Once the project is expired or is closed all data, including files, virtual desktops, and volumes stored in SD Connect or SD Desktop, will be permanently deleted 90 days after project closure or expiration.

When using these cloud services, there are important factors to consider, including current limitations and ongoing improvements. We recommend reviewing these details to ensure the best experience. This workflow is flexible and can be adapted to meet a variety of research needs. Before planning data storage or transfer, feel free to contact our Service Desk.
