Finnish LUMI resource applications

Finnish LUMI projects are used to manage access to the Finnish share of LUMI and the resources provided by it. Finnish LUMI projects are separate from CSC projects that use billing units and they are restricted to LUMI environment only.

The Finnish LUMI services are free of charge for academic research for members of Finnish higher education institutions and state research institutes. Commercial users need to purchase services. If you are a commercial user, please consult CSC Service Desk for acquiring resources.

A Finnish LUMI project can include one or several CSC user accounts and one CSC user account can be a member in several Finnish LUMI projects. Each LUMI project must have a Project Manager, who creates the project and applies for resources, manages the user accounts that belong to the project and is responsible of the resource usage. The Project Manager is typically a leader of a research team or other senior researcher. See more for project manager prerequisites.

Finnish LUMI projects are fixed in time (excl. commercial access modes) and resources, and the total resources must be defined already in the project application. Please note that in addition to the scientific evaluation, also amount of previous project’s remaining resources and resource usage affect the awarded resources. Also, in general new users are granted with small resources to begin with and users are advised to apply for larger resources after successfully demonstrating their resource usage. Please note that Resource Officers and Resource Allocation Board may reject applications that contain incorrect or incomplete information, or if there is a reason to suspect that the user violates CSC Terms of Use, the free-of-charge policy or LUMI Terms of Use.

Finnish LUMI Access modes

LUMI Development Access

Minor projects focusing on code and algorithm development and developing a science portal or other infrastructure software components.

– Minor projects to develop software for LUMI, duration 12 months, extendable for other years
– Max. 1 million core-h, 5,000 GPUh, 90 000 TiB-h

Note! If you are new LUMI user, you should first apply for a Development Access project to demonstrate your codes’ and methods’ functionality before applying for a Regular Access project.
LUMI Regular Access

Middle size projects with a case to enable progress of science in the domains covered. These applications are expected to be able to justify the need for large allocations in terms of compute time, data storage and support resources because they are significantly contributing to the progress of science in their domain.

– Middle size projects, duration fixed 12 months
– Max. 10 million core-h, 100,000 GPU-h, 570 000 TiB-h
LUMI Benchmark Access

Projects to collect GPU performance data on LUMI in order to document the technical feasibility of their proposals to be submitted to LUMI Extreme Scale Access calls.

– Projects to show readiness for Extreme Scale Access in LUMI-G, duration fixed 3 months
– Max 0.5 million core-h, 5,000 GPU-h, 22 000 TiB-h
LUMI Extreme Scale Access

Projects with a high-impact, high-gain innovative research, and it is open to all fields of science, justifying the need for the capacity to use extremely large allocations in terms of compute time (especially GPU) and data storage resources.

– Calls for projects are organized once a year, duration fixed 12 months
LUMI Commercial Access

Projects for companies to support their research, development and innovation activities. These are either solely for companies or companies collaborate with Finnish higher-education or research institutes in a joint research, development and innovation projects.

– If you are a commercial user, please consult CSC Service Desk

How to write a good Finnish LUMI resource application?

When applying for a Finnish LUMI project in MyCSC, please consider the following regarding your project:

Project nameGive your project a name that clearly and concisely represents your work.
Project descriptionProvide a description that explains:
– your project’s goals
– why it is important
– the methods you plan to use
– project implementation timeline
Science area (OECD)Please add Primary and Secondary science area of your project.
Funding decisionsPlease add possible funding decisions to your project. These funding decision are taken into account in the application review.
Access modePlease select the access mode you want to use in this project.

Note! If you are new LUMI user, you should first apply for a Development Access project to demonstrate your codes’ and methods’ functionality before applying for a Regular Access project.
AI methodsPlease select the AI methods your project uses, if any.
ResourcesChoose the applied resources carefully. If you have a previous LUMI project, please estimate your resource needs based on the usage.

– In case you are applying for more resources than you have used before, please justify the increase amount in ‘Short overview of results’ field in the application.

– Note! If you are new LUMI user, you should first apply for a Development Access project to demonstrate your codes’ and methods’ functionality before applying for a Regular Access project. This affects the amount of resources available. In general, new users are only granted with small resources to begin with.
PublicationsPlease add max. 10 recent publications that are based on used CSC resources and where CSC has been acknowledged.

– If your project is new and/or you don’t have publications that are based on the used CSC resources, you can add other publications relevant to your project.

– If there are no publications, please add a dummy and explain in the ‘Short overview of results’ field in the application.
KeywordsPlease add max. 10 keywords that describe your work.
Short overview of resultsPlease describe what results have you achieved in your previous LUMI project? How the LUMI project implementation has proceeded?

– If you are applying resources for a new project and you do not have previous LUMI projects, please state this here.

– Please estimate how are you going to use the resources per quarter during the next 12 months from now.

– In case you are applying for more resources than you have used before, please justify here the increase amount.

– If there are no publications, please add a dummy in the ‘Publications’ section and explain your situation here.
Program codes, methods and research objectivesWhen applying for CPU and/or GPU hours, please describe:

– Which software are you planning to use?
– Have you run the software on our systems or some other systems before?
– What kind of computing do you plan to do? E.g. simulations, jobs, analyses, services?
– How have you confirmed the efficiency of the computing? E.g. simulation benchmark, scaling tests, alternative approach?
– What results will you produce with these applied resources?

When applying for Storage hours, please describe:

– What data are you storing?
– Which storage system do you plan to use and how?
– Who is responsible for managing the data?
– Who owns the data?
– If available, provide a data management plan URL
– How will you manage your data after active data processing or computing phase?
– Will you share your data from the system? With whom do you intend to share the data?
– What is your exit strategy from CSC environment when your CSC project ends?

Other LUMI resources

If the standard Development, Benchmark or Regular Access resources offered by CSC are not sufficient for your needs, there are other options to turn to.

Finnish LUMI Extreme Scale Access

The Finnish LUMI Extreme Scale Access provides extremely large resources for high-impact and high-gain innovative research open to all fields of science awarded from the Finnish share of LUMI. These resources are meant for projects exceeding the standard CSC resources and they are distributed by yearly calls organised by CSC. The calls are open for researchers in Finnish higher education and research institutions. All applications will be reviewed both from scientific and technical perspective. Access to resources is limited to one year.

The next Call for Finnish LUMI Extreme Scale Access will be organised in Spring 2027. Specific instructions on how to apply for these resources are announced in the call.

EuroHPC Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) resources

In addition to each LUMI consortium countries own national shares, half of the LUMI resources belong to the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking. Applicants from EU Member States or countries associated with Horizon 2020/Horizon Europe can apply for resources via EuroHPC JU’s technical and scientific peer-review process. These LUMI shares are allocated by a peer-review process (comparable to that used for PRACE Tier-0 access). In addition, up to 20% of the EuroHPC JU resources are be available to industry and SMEs. By partnering with European research groups and/or companies, the EuroHPC JU resources are available to non-European research projects as well. (Note that the Principle Investigator for any projects that apply for time on LUMI needs to be based in the EU or an associated country.)

In addition to the regular access, the EuroHPC JU also provides AI Factories Access modes to ensure access to tailored supercomputing capacity for AI startups and industry.

Please find here more information about the EuroHPC JU resources:
